About the Guild
Guilds
Most Guilds are professional organizations that regulate a craft, make sure their members are treated fairly. Once an apprentice has completed his/her training and showed a command of his craft, he/she can be admitted into a guild. Each guild is made up of members of a trade. The guild protects the from outside interferences. A member who breaks a code can be brought before the guild for consequences. When an artist or craftsman is admitted to a guild, he/she is free to accept jobs from anyone or own their own workshops.
However, the Museum Fly Tyers Guild is more like a craftsman family of those that enjoy sharing their fly tying skills with each other and the public.
Membership in the Fly Tyers Guild
All anglers that tie flies from beginners to professionals are welcomed to be a member of the Fly Tyers Guild of the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians. The Fly Tyers Guild is an open membership, welcoming anyone that tie flies.
Levels
Professional – A Fly Tyer that markets their flies either directly or indirectly through fly shop bins. The guild has members that will freely consult new tyers in the steps toward direct and indirect fly pattern sales. The guild maintains a list of fly shops that seek locally hand-tied flies for re-sale. The guild also maintains a list of websites and material supply companies that support freelance fly tyers.
Instructor – A Fly Tyer that has reached a level of confidence in tying a variety of fly patterns. As an instructor of fly tying, they have conducted Fly Tying Classes for Fly Shops, Clubs or their own entrepreneurial purposes. The Guild conducts various levels of fly tying classes at the museum and other locations.
Experienced – A Fly Tyer that has reached a level of confidence in tying a variety of fly patterns. The guild provides opportunities for experienced fly tyers to teach fly tying as well as perform demonstrations to the public.
Demonstrator – A Fly Tyer that has reached a level of confidence in tying specific fly patterns and is willing to narrate and demonstrate those patterns to the public. The guild provides opportunities to grow one’s fly tying skills in fly pattern designs they have never tied before./p>
Apprentice – A novice, newbie, tenderfoot, recruit, or starter that is learning to tie flies and seeks others to assist in their learning curve. The Guild provides a rich environment where an inexperienced Fly Tyer can pursue fly tying lessons or simply have others to ask questions as needed.
